Although the autonomous car from Uber has an emergency backup driver on the wheel but struck and killed the pedestrian. It is believed to be the first death caused by self-driving technology. The self-driving technology is in an experimental phase and governments are still working on ways to regulate it and make it efficiently useful. Yet, Uber suspended all the testings immediately after the tragic news in Tempe, Pittsburgh, Toronto and San Fransisco.
The accident may lead to slowing the rollout of autonomous vehicles on public streets and roads. Those criticizing the success of Uber are not hiding their happiness to point the fingers and remind everyone about the flaws and dangers of self-driving in the roads.
The Senator Richard Blumenthal, Democrat of Connecticut stated that: “This tragic incident makes clear that autonomous vehicle technology has a long way to go before it is truly safe for the passengers, pedestrians, and drivers who share America’s roads,”
